Microsoft, MDM and Hierarchy Management

December 16th, 2008

Microsoft are quietly busy with the implementation of a lot of new features in their future MDM offering. From what I saw on a quite practical presentation a few months ago, Microsoft will be providing a rich hierarchy management feature set with MDM. A few features, which will be important for BI projects are:

  • editing of hierarchies (rearranging nodes, creation of new nodes, deletion of nodes, etc.)
  • controlling/approval of hierarchies by hierarchy administrator users
  • editing of hierarchy property sets by user/groups
  • notification of changes in hierarchies
  • version control
    • editing hierarchies in a non-production mode
    • history of changes
    • change tracking

I am sure that by the release date there would be many additions and improvements but even at the current stage the MDM system looks very promising. Unlike the current way of dimension/hierarchy editing through Visual Studio, the new Microsoft MDM hub will be web-based, featuring user based security, easy access and easy to use interface.

Apart from the features in regards to hierarchy management, the MDM hub will also include powerful features for consolidation and management of master data.

Seems like the final release of the Microsoft MDM hub is due with the next Office release.
